HMS Exeter

The UK’s defence bilateral programme with Ukraine is the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. Recent events include:

  • the British Council’s Peacekeeping English Project, jointly funded and directed by the UK’s Ministry of Defence and Foreign and Commonwealth Office has, delivered English language training to over 3650 personnel from the Ukrainian Forces
  • visit by HMS Atherstone and HMS Hurworth (2 Hunt Class MHC’s) to Sevastopol
  • visit by HMS Exeter (Type 42 Destroyer) to Sevastopol
  • RFA Diligence to Odessa for Exercise Sea Breeze 08
  • visit to the UK by the Ukrainian National Defence Academy’s Strategic Staff course
  • British Military Advisory and Training Team (Central and Eastern Europe) assistance to train junior officers in command, leadership and management, and as instructors for peace support operations
  • the selection of Ukrainian officers for UK-sponsored places at Royal College of Defence Studies and Advanced Command & Staff Course
  • the attendance by Ukrainian officers on shorter courses in the UK, such as English language training and Pre-Parachute Selection course
  • RN support for the Ukrainian Navy in its preparation to take part in NATO’s counter-terrorist operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR in the Mediterranean
  • support from PJHQ to the Ukrainian project team developing a Joint Operational Command concept
  • visit by the Chief of General Staff and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to the Ministry of Defence, London
  • visit by the Royal College of Defence Studies to Ukraine
  • RAF element of NATO Tactical Leadership Programme briefing the Ukrainian AF on NATO air doctrine and procedures
  • assistance with the Ukrainian project for the professionalism of their Armed Forces.
