Language test. After two weeks of hard work, my Ukrainian immersion in Lviv is drawing to a close. I feel sorry I can't stay longer – another two weeks might make all the difference, and Lviv is a fascinating city – but am looking forward to getting stuck in back in Kyiv, and putting my new-found skills to good use. In my final lesson I am given a written test to complete. Anyone like language tests? Not me, especially when their purpose is unclear. My efforts are taken away for examination. When the lesson is nearly over, the course administrator and the Vice-Rector of the university come in to award me a smart certificate saying I have passed the course at B2 level. The test therefore turns out to have been invaluable, as one of the objectives I agreed with my line manager in London at the start of the year was to reach B2 level in Ukrainian within 18 months of arriving at post. I vow to put the certificate on display in my office in the embassy.
