"Ї" magazine. After lessons, I meet Taras Voznyak and Irina Magadish at "Ї" (the Ukrainian letter "i", with two dots on top), described as an "Independent Cultural Magazine". Their office is in a beautiful old building with wooden stairs and art deco details. Conversation is mostly about whether the EU will ever allow Ukraine to join the European Union. Irina says a recent comment by Angela Merkel shows it'll never happen. I argue that much is happening already, including the Eastern Partnership and a free trade agreement under negotiation, but that that Ukraine needs to play its part too. They note the widespread resentment in Ukraine that when Poland joined the Schengen visa system, travel between the two neighbours, which used to be straightforward, became more difficult. Round the corner, meanwhile, the Poles are building a brand new Lviv consulate to help with the hundreds of thousands of visas a year they issue to Ukrainians travelling to Poland. The border is 40 km from Lviv.
